X Games recap: Day 1

It’s hard being on the road for 2 weeks straight AND running an internet empire / blog sensation… So our apologies that these posts are last – but the next few will be our updates from the road. The first stop – X Games.

In typical SIEGE fashion, We rolled in a pretty tight posse – Myself, Jared from STS, Joey Brezinski, and Philip Soven were making waves all weekend. Below are some selects from the Skate Street Finals, and our randomness. See the full gallery after the jump.

One of the largest skateboarding events in the world – the Maloof Money Cup is going on right now in Costa Mesa, CA. 1. Pierre Luc Gagnon
2. Bob Burnquist
3. Andy Macdonald
4. Bucky Lasek
5. Sandro Dias
6. Adam Taylor
7. Rob Lorifice
8. Pedro Barros
9. Elliot Sloan

3 The Hardway

We recently got connected with some up-and-comers out of Colorado called 3 The Hard Way. We started jamming their tunes right after that and have been listening ever since. These guys have some serious skills – In fact, their DJ Cysko Rokwel is competing in the DMC USA championships this weekend. Check out the video of Cysko below and check their music on their website here.

X Games recap: RATT Concert

Finally getting to upload all the pics from the X Games this past weekend. It’s been a pretty insane whirlwind of a weekend starting off with the Ratt. Our friend Chris from Bing has been putting on a series of concerts to promote their site. This one happened to be at the Key Club on Sunset Ave.

Since I haven’t bumped Ratt since the Monsters of Rock CD, this was a pretty fresh concert. Check the pics below.

Kanye debuts new song at the Facebook offices.

Kanye West is definitely all sorts of social media now. After being on twitter for only a few days he already has close to 300k fans.

Rolling Stone reports:

“Many times in life I’ve had to deal with moments of doubt. And as it’s been a minute since I’ve performed any fresh material in front of an audience, this could’ve been one of those moments… but it wasn’t,” West wrote on his blog in a letter addressed to the Facebook crew. “Your energy was a gift so electric, so genuine, that it really helped me give my best. The energy was so inspiring I had to keep going! I just hope you got as much from me as I got from you… which was everything! Love to all my fans, especially at Facebook.”

Rick Ross “Teflon Don”

Rick Ro$$ out today with his 4th studio album from his very own Maybach Music Group. This album features the lead single “Super High” with Neyo and “Live fast, Die Young” with Kanye West. Check out the last track on our music blog.

Girl Talk – Summer Twilight Concert Series

The Salt Lake City Arts Council has been holding the “Twilight Concert Series” for years now. It started with just some local bands doing free shows on Thursday nights in the park and it has now evolved into a huge deal. Every year the lineup or artists gets better and better and the crowds get larger and larger. Last week was the kickoff with Modest Mouse and a record 45,000 people showed up to get their music on. This week the fine city of Salt Lake brought out the one and only Girl Talk. I have been a fan of the DJ / Mashup artist for a good while and it was insane to see the live show

If you haven’t heard about a live Girl Talk show I would recommend checking one out. A lot of raving. A lot of crowdsurfing. A lot of music. If you haven’t checked out Girl Talk yet, check out the write up on our music blog.

Girl Talk

You have to admire artists that can bring the heat on a studio album AND get a crowd rocking like it’s business as usual. Pittsburgh artist Gregg Gillis, better known by his stage name Girl Talk, does both effortlessly.

Girl Talk is known for his mashup style where he takes a dozen or more tracks and sound clips and merges them together into one track. Over the years his style and music has stirred up a lot of controversy and debate about the difference between borrowing and altering copyrighted material to make it a completely unique piece, and stealing copyrighted tracks. The New York Times has claimed his music is a “lawsuit waiting to happen.” The excerpt below from the “Good Copy / Bad Copy” documentary is pretty interesting and shows a little bit of his controversial process.

Girl Talk has mostly been known in the underground scene until he dropped “Night Ripper” in 2006 and started getting a lot of mainstream exposure. In a not-typical record release, Girl Talk actually released Night Ripper by letting customers choose what price they were willing to pay for the album and then downloading it. He now releases all of his albums this way including the release of “Feed the Animals” in 2008. (which had over 300 songs in a total of 50 minutes)

While his tracks are rad by themselves, the best way to get the full experience is to hit a live show. Because of all the audience involvement, his shows feel more like a raging party than a concert. The stages are usually packed with people, there are toilet paper guns, giant balloons full of confetti, mosh pits and plenty of crowd surfing crowd rafting.

Check some of his tracks on his Myspace and see what all the hype is about. Also, don’t forget to check the photos from his latest Salt Lake City Concert on our company blog.
