Why did you first start skateboarding?
It started off simply for transportation and turned into and obsession.
How many years have you been skateboarding professionally?
16 years
When did you first feel like you had broken onto the scene as a professional skateboarder?
When I started filming the Ban This video with Stacy Peralta. At that point my dream came true.
What has been the most memorable experience in your career?
The 10th Annual Transworld Awards. They gave me Reader’s Choice, Best Video Part and Best Street. It wasn’t because I won, it was being acknowledged by my peers that I have looked up to and respected throughout my career.
Which other skaters have motivated you both in the beginning and now?
In the beginning, Lance Mountain, Mark Gonzalez, Natas Kaupas, and Tony Hawk. Now, Paul Rodriguez, Marc Johnson, Mike Mo, Chris Cole, Corey Kennedy, Shane O’Neil, Torey Pudwell, Anthony Van Engelen, and Eric Koston. These are just a few of the skateboarders that have motivated me….. my list is endless.
What has kept you going through all the travel, wrecks, video parts and hard work?
It continues to challenge me physically and mentally. I have yet to find anything else that does that for me.
Which other people have inspired you?
Spike Jonze, Ty Evans, Michael Jordan, Tiger Woods. All those people seem to love what they do and they’re always taking it to the next level.
What besides skateboarding drives you?
What are you passionate about? I enjoy golfing, films, music, art, but skateboarding is my true passion.
What is a typical day like in the life of Guy?
Wake up. Make some calls to see who’s skating. Get some food and a starbucks. Go to The Berrics to warm up and then hit the streets. Head home to meet my lady for dinner and some tivo. Throw in a Thai massage if I’m sore.
What are the top 5 most played songs on your iPod?
Connor Oberst – Lenders in the Temple
Nirvana – Lake of Fire
Wreckless Eric – Whole Wide World
Rolling Stones – Wild Horses
Johnny Cash – Empire of Dirt, also a great video!
And all of Band of Horses.
How has music made an impact on your career and life in general?
I feel like all of my video parts have been edited to some really great music which is almost as important as the skateboarding. Like when I was young and I skated to The Jackson 5 – ABC, 123, it gave it a young and happy vibe. For my part in Fully Flared, we used a couple of songs from Band of Horses that had a more moving and deeper vibe to it since I had been away from skateboarding for some time.
If you could have a theme song for real life, what song would play every time you were “in the zone?”
The Rocky Balboa theme song…Gonna Fly Now.
Why SIEGE Audio?
Headphones are really important for skaters. We’re always traveling and on the go, and using portable gadgets, so good headphones are key. Siege makes products that look and feel good. If you enjoy music you might as well get the best sound and comfort available.
Do you have any parting words of wisdom?
Take it one day at a time. Live in the moment, not in the results because you’re powerless over it.
